Something that appears a lot in Ricky Hatton montages....

How effective is this? What's the desired effect on the abs?

Something like it's meant to condition your abs to take a punch, it's silly really. Another old school method people see pro boxers doing so they follow like sheep. At least you have the brain to ask the question.

All about hitting the abs to harden them, what you'd excpect. I'd say it's a good exercise so long as you don't go inot it too hard too soon.

Ohhhh. So if I want to make a certain muscle on my body harder all I have to do is sit there punching that muscle... No.

Like I said; followers without a clue. Use your time more productively, sparring, overall conditioning, heavy bag work, something that won't possibly give you internal injuries with no real reward.

I forgot about that thread. Some of the members on this board are hilarious, particularly the ones that give their incorrect opinions like they're fact. Boxinglad123 here, prime example.

    And can't forget -

If getting smacked with a medicine ball in the stomach helps you to take bodyshots, why don't you drop the ****ing thing on your face?

Its not quite the same, taking bodyshots can be improved with correct breathing and tensing at the right time, than isnt applicable to the face.

Pac does body conditioning because of his stoppage losses, but I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that Freddie Roach doesn't condone it.

It's worked for fighters of the past, why shouldn't it work for fighters of today? It's by no means a must but shoudln't just be disguarded.

I'm pretty sure any of these fighters of the past would still have done well for themselves if they didn't bother dropping a weight on their abs.

What you've said so far about it hardening and building muscle is completely incorrect. It should be disregarded, having a weight dropped on you has the potential for more harm than good.

It wont make the muscles in your stomach harder but it will condition it to handle pain down there. A guy who has taken many shots to the face before will react better to receiving a punch to the face than a guy who's never taken a punch to the face before. I remember my first spar and the shock of getting hit, now I just shrug it off.

Medecine balls to abs wont ruin your face so it trains you to absorb pain so why not.

the training technique is done for a mental conditioning rather than physical exercise. it trains your mind to know what pain feels like when getting punched to the body. this is the only excersice which can recreate the pain effect.
