...so i sparred for the first time against a heavier amatuer fighter and i must say my cardio is pitiful, that and/or i was too tense and wasnt breathing properly. when i wasn't out of breath though id say i was getting the better of him. the only time i was hit was when i was trying to clinch because i was to tired to do anything else heh. anyway, now to my question...

i dont own my own pair of 16 oz gloves so the trainer let my use a ringside pair i think it was and i couldn't really close my fist as tight as with my training gloves. im looking to buy a pair of 16 oz gloves purely for sparring and money isn't an issue. id actually need to save up but i want to get the best gloves as im in this for the long run. im thinking of getting a pair of winning 16oz gloves. winning seems like the brand the top pros wear. how do you guys feel about winning gloves for sparring? what other brands/models do you guys prefer to spar with? i want be able to make a very tight fist and be able to hurt the guy if i need to back him off. the gloves i sparred with had very thick and soft foam. i know not all 16 oz gloves are created equally so i would appreciate some suggestions! thanks in advance!

First thing you have to do is forget about thinking how to hurt the person across from you. And for sparring get gloves that will firstly protect your hands. And it doesn't hurt to have good padding that also protects your partners. Believe me when I say, that is the wrong attitude to have and will only lead to you catching beat downs.

Anyway, Winning ARE awesome. Just really pricey. But if you can afford it, definitely. I have these Rivals below and are the best gloves I've ever used. Great hand protection. Lots of padding for partners faces. Great wrist support. Also, you don't want lace up, too much on and off hassle.

Winnings are the best for hand protection, simply put. But consequently, you won't be hurting people as badly due to the padding. That's alright though, because once you learn to place your shots you'll still be able to hurt people if need be. If you've got the money (over 200 bucks) then go with winnings. Also, they're a bit on the bulky side, which is great for sparring because you can cover up a lot better than with smaller gloves.

thanks for the suggestions and tips everyone. i might go ahead and buy the 16 oz reyes training gloves. i watched a few glove reviews on youtube and they seem to be what i am looking for. as far as trying to hurt my sparring partner- that isnt my main goal but i do want to mimic the intensity in sparring as close as possible to what a fight in competion will be like. im not head hunting or anything like that. ill probably get lace up since ill have a pair of gloves for sparring(trainer will be there) and just use my velcro gloves for bag work etc. also with the reyes gloves the reviews say they are more compact which i like so i have a better chance of slipping a punch through someone's gaurd. i know it will work against me also having less glove for blocking but it will encourage more head movement which is more natural for me anyway.

Reyes gloves are bad for sparring. the compactness results in more injury than bigger sparring gloves.

Tbh if you can't hurt someone through a pair of winning you obviously don't hit very hard, so you'll want to focus on movement and speed anyway.

Also, using smaller gloves to help 'slip a punch through someone's guard' won't make you a better boxer, you'll have the same sized gloves as your opponent in a bout so the equipment based advantage will suddenly disappear.

i plan on getting the winning gloves when $$$ isn't so tight but for now ill try out the reyes gloves since they are on sale and make sure to use high quality gauze type handwraps along with some tape to protect my hands.

    -emphasis mine

I'm just gonna let you know that in my gym, guys who show up in sparring with hard gloves, or sneak a pair of 12/14oz when everyone else is in 16's generally get beatdowns. It doesn't help you learn, it just helps you rely on a power advantage you don't actually have.

These same guys also tend to do better in sparring then they do in actual bouts for that reason.

Tbh, you don't train with me so I'm not gonna keep on about it, I'm just letting you in on a bit of etiquette. Personally, I'd carry on using the gym's gloves until I had enough for my own pair of Rival or Winning.

In my gym we wouldn't be allowed to spar with Reyes. I'm telling you, you can hurt the other guy with a goddamn sockem bopper on your hand if need be. The more padding for sparring the better. This comes from a guy who wears thickass sparring gloves and wraps sponges into his wraps. And I still manage to keep guys honest, even when they outweigh me by 50 pounds.

With Reyes, you're just asking for a hand injury when you whack someone on top of the head someday. Also, your sparring partners will really put it on you. And Reyes aren't cheap either...

so the reyes gloves are significantly harder compared to winning gloves even though they are both 16 oz training gloves? i dont want to be known as the assh*le is the gym. i was plainning on wrapping my hands extra careful maybe with a knuckle pad of gauze with wraps. im still researching different ways on wrapping hands. i am in this for the long run and i do want to protect my hands. winning was the way i wanted to go but i saw my #2 choice- reyes on sale so i ordered them. if they arrive and seem to be too dangerous for my hands or for use against my gym mates ill return them. ill also talk with my trainer about them.

Aren't Reyes pretty pricey anyway? I'm seeing like £110-125 for a pair of Reyes 16oz sparring gloves.

PS what "Onepunch" said is so true. Seen so many sparring sessions escalate into brawls when one guy is wearing 12's and every shot he lands is hurting the other guy, so the guy in 16's starts throwing bombs.

reyes are expensive retailing for $150 here in the usa but i found a site that has them on sale for $119.99(boxingdepot.com.) i know i said price wasn't an issue but reyes are said to be top quality along with winning. seeing winnings gloves for $270 vs reyes $119 made me want to atleast check out the reyes gloves in person. also, i heard reyes was comparable to grant and i beleive that was what the amatuer fighter i sparred with was using. he out weighed me by 15-20 pounds and i was really phased by his punches.
