https://www.sportsbusinessjournal.co...1c3d39b1c033af No where near what Money used to do but not bad. I’m sure that bald headed weirdo Dana and Oscar are on suicide watch.
Not bad. A bit more than I figured it would do... i figured around 550k. But really, given that Berlanga isnt really known, not a bad number. Is it known what he did vs Munguia? I wonder if he beat the UFC that night. But dont think UFC disclose their ppv numbers.
The Munguia fight apparently did around 550k buys. The numbers for Canelo's last two fights are good, considering Amazon Prime didn't do a great job to promote either fight. If those fights were on HBO or Showtime, they certainly would have done better numbers.
For reference, the revenue is slightly more than Floyd vs Marquez/Hatton/Gerrero/Maidana. I genuinely believe that ramping up the PPV prices to such ridiculous numbers like 89,99$ is costing them profits. It´s just too much. And of course they are going to struggle to reach the golden 1,000,000 buy rate that Manny and Floyd set. Heck, I think that Manny and Floyd would struggle to do that today.
Interesting. A) I definitely didnt expect Berlanga to do better numbers than Munguia. B) I dont see how Canelos Munguia performance would cause an uptick in canelo fans tuning in for Berlanga. Seems Berlanga must be a bigger name than I thought and Munguias box office appeal must be a bit overrated.
Fights like jmm n hatton are from over 15 years ago. Inflation has gone crazy since then. When adjusted for inflation this doesnt come close to their revenue. Mayweather vs jmm when adjusted for inflation is over $70 million. Kinda apples n oranges imo. But ya I agree prices and economy are likely impacting numbers. I think something as equally damaging if not more is how easy streaming is these days. Its just too easy now to stream decent quality streams.
Looked and guess Canelo did around $17million at the gate. Which is considerably less than UFC did. But the sphere likely played the key reason why there.
Pretty good numbers considering they went up against the UFC, which if you compare the cards, Boxing won hands down.
I don´t want to say too much, but you can easily find illegal streams that are as good in quality as the actual broadcast. It´s insane. This did not exist 12 years ago. Inflation is real, no denying it. I don´t think it´s quite fair to just blank compare inflation numbers, but even if done so, Canelo is still selling well. It´s fair to say that he isn´t as big as Floyd and Manny were, but he is the clear cut nr 3. And heck, if he fought better opposition then he would do better numbers. Canelo´s last two fights did slightly better than Manny vs Clottey, when adjusted for inflation. Give Canelo an actually popular opponent and he could rival Floyd and Manny. He has demonstrated this capability in the past with Golovkin and Chavez Jr.
Its almost unbelievable numbers imo. As in, ppv buys reports have a notorious issue with being inflated vs the real number. Given the price, the streaming, the UFC on the same night, and the opponent, I almost dont believe this report. With the context of all of this these are damn good numbers.
It's unfortunately confirmation for him and fuel that he can keep doing what he wants and still sell numbers. I bought the fight and watched with some friends but I suppose all the fans who say they won't support him aren't having any impact on his numbers either way lol. I heard the ufc did a 22 million dollar gate and had astronomical ticket prices in comparison.
I did a little looking into it and found no credible source on the 650k. Initially it was reported at 750k but no actual sources for that either. A lot of people are claiming SBJ as their source, but SBJ themselves just say "a source said".
