Byrd's handspeed was incredible at his peak. This fight was the classic outclassing you see with a technically sound boxer versus a crude slugger. Chris was underrated.

Good find. Thanks for posting. I actually think Chris Byrd was a very good fighter. Had decent speed and boxing skills in an era where he was surrounded by a lot of big men.

Yet you give him zero credit for the Vitali victory and credit it entirely to a "fluke injury"
The body shots you you see here are the exact same he was landing to Vitali's body.. To me Vitali looked more exhausted than injured when he tapped out.
Either way Byrd's win was not a fluke

I was pretty surprised that Byrd KOd Thunder at the time as I was used to seeing him win decisions all over the place around this time. Jimmy didn't help himself by (if I'm remembering this right) going all out in round 1.

Anyone think Byrd beats Tyson, Lewis or Holy at that time?

Thanks for posting. Byrd was an intelligent fighter who got the most out of his skills.

Decent shot at Holyfield and Tyson, no to Lewis.

This fight ruined Thunder, Thunder crushed Crawford Grimsley, then lost in a shocker to skillful journeyman Maurice Harris. Instead of rebuilding Thunder fought prime up and coming Chris Byrd, and couldn't lay a glove on him. Thunder was on a good winning streak, culminating with the Grimsley win, and he was ranked in the top 10 by at least one of the major governing bodies, then gets ko'd by Harris and Byrd, and becomes a joourneyman. The last win I remember watching was a decision over an aging Tim Witherspoon.

Not at all Prime Tysons hands and feet were too fast, he would catch and hurt Byrd

Byrd ruined his body with steroid abuse. Marriage fell apart, had severe chronic pain.
He seems to be doing better these days.

Glad to hear he's put everything together again.

Is there a written source on this?

As for steroid abuse, ofc Byrd is not going to admit it. He gained roughly 40 pounds or so in three fights. He says heavy exercise ruined his body but severe nerve damage doesn't happen like that.

Long term steroid use is known to damage the nerves.

Fair enough. Thanks. I thought there might have been an investigation or something. It sometimes comes out that way, as with Evan Fields.

Agreed prime Tyson wins. The post I was responding to was "around that time" which would of been when Bryd fought Thunder (Dec 1997)
