After the thread asking Eubanks' top eight performances it got me thinking about Eubank-Watson I. At the time this fight was considered a robbery and the majority of the press and general public felt Watson had clearly won. I disagree, I scored it very closely mainly as I felt Eubank won four of the first five rounds but Watson rallied at the end to a draw. I was wondering how you guys had the fight.
I've watched it at least a dozen times Watson was robbed no doubt about it in my mind. Eubank was excellent but he had a few decisions go his way which were controversial over the years. I rate Benn higher and he won that rematch I don't care what the judges said.
Well I agree with you about Benn-Eubank II, I think Benn won that fight but it was close. No doubt some of Eubanks decisions were controversial including the two mentioned.
I am going to watch these again to convince myself... I thought that Benn won and so did Watson....:good I always turn the volume down when I am re-scoring a contest.... it is so easy to get drawn in by different commentators....listening to US and British commentators is so contrasting, would you agree?....:think
I agree but its something I've never tried the fact I often disagree with the commentators in the US and the UK on their scorecards they put up makes me think they're not influencing me but maybe I'm wrong I'll watch them again with the volume down myself to see if I score them any different. Any excuse is a good one to watch these classic fights again so enjoy and tell me what you think afterwards okay. :good
So true.... watch Hagler v Leonard with the volume down....look at the aggresor Hagler, his workrate, shots thrown and landed, volume up or down!!..Look at how many shots that Leonard does NOT throw whilst on his bike....the judges must be influenced by the crowd?? different feeling with no volume?? IMO.... what do you think??...:think
I've watched it a dozen times and scored it three times. I've scored it a win for Watson, a win for Eubank and a draw. Very, very close fight. Watson was convinced he was robbed.
I always turn the sound off when rescoring fights too. Too easy to sometimes get swayed by the commentators and also people dont realise how the crowd sway a fight. Hatton for example was getting knocked sill by Floyd but if you just listen to it you'd think he was running wild in there.
1. Draw 2. Eubank 3 Watson 4. Eubank 5. Eubank 6. Watson 7. Eubank 8. Watson (just) 9. Eubank 10. Watson 11. Watson 12. Eubank (just) 115/114 Eubank. Could've gone either way really, lot's of difficult rounds to score, would hardy have beeen a robbery whichever way.
6-5-1 even to eubank. admittedly that was a couple of yrs ago now when i scored it. close fight. it's a little like the mayweather-castillo fight. eubank arguably wins the first 5 rds. :bbb
I've watched the Hagler-Leonard fight but never scored it although I always felt Hagler was hard done by. I will watch it again and score it with and without volume and see what I think.
Watching the fight again with the sound off I scored it 116-115 for Eubank. The first two rounds were very close, not much between them at all. The third round was Watson's. The fourth and fifth were Eubank's. The sixth again was very close. I gave the seventh to Watson and the eighth to Eubank although mrbassie scored those rounds vice verca which again shows the closeness of the fight. The big difference for me this time is that I gave Eubank one of the last three rounds where as last time I scored all three for Watson. We seem to have reached the conclusion that this was not only a very close fight but some of us really think Eubank won! So the judges were pretty accurate with the MD verdict. It also goes to show just how reviled Eubank was by the general public and the press in England at the time. It should be pointed out that I really think Watson was dominating the rematch, an absolutely tragedy we didnt get to see him fulfil his ambitions as I really believe he would have been a major force in world boxing.
