If he had been, he probably wouldn't have been caught. See, e.g., Tyson's admission to using fake genitals for urine tests.

I doubt it. Most people using steroids for boxing are doing it to put on size and muscle/strength such as Holyfield. Tyson was always a big guy even as a teenager so he had no need for that. If anything he often had to lose weight to cut down to size, not gain. On the other hand I do think he used steroids for his first few matches out of prison not only because of his more muscular physique, but also he had to do something to quickly catch back up to the top after having been inactive for 3 years.

He has admitted to using recreational drugs though and a lot of them, but as far as PEDs...outside of when he first began his post-prison career, I don't see why he would've needed to use them or what advantage they'd give him.

There are PEDs in all kinds of sports, which do all kinds of things.

Heck, there are PEDs in golf.

If he did, it was just for a bit post-prison. There are pics of him as a 13 year old where he already had a ton of mass. His level of mass was completely natural for him.

Hell, look at him as an old guy. Even during periods where he's out of shape, his arms and shoulders are close to the same size they were in his prime, and his legs are still tree trunks. He's just a genetic freak.

Good question, why would any athlete take something that would make him/her faster, stronger, leaner, quicker, improve his reflexes, improve his stamina, recover from workouts faster, train harder, maybe even improve his eye sight? Would there be any benefits at all in a sport like boxing, it's just a sport where a person can suffer serious injury or death if fighting a bigger, stronger, faster, leaner opponent...

cross trainer, I know you understand. Do people really think that some people in a sport take PEDs, others don't, it's just a matter of preference, the PEDs don't really increase performance? Stunning.

Who cares, it wasnt even illegal for a large part of his career.
Nobody cared, knew about it or tested back then. Steroids werent even illegal to own privately until the 90s i believe.

Holyfield shouldnt be discredited either just because his use was more obvious. While i do believe he abused it to an extent that he basically manufactured himself to a HW and you could see the side effects in the ring when he had his heart issues.
I once read somewhere that he would enter camp at 190-200 and gain 15+lbs during camp and that this affected his stamina issues

I'm no expert in either boxing or PEDs. But yes, it strikes me as unreasonable to believe that boxers are Men Of Honor unlike athletes in every other sport. And then in the same breath, people talk up Sonny Liston's criminal career as a Mob leg breaker.

The best defense I've seen of the Golden Age boxers from PED allegations is that they wouldn't have trusted that PEDs were effective. Which seems plausible enough.

Probably not. He admitted cheating urine samples for other reasons, so at least we know he is capable of lying.

No, steroids took Mike Tyson and had nasty side-effects.

I doubt he took them in his prime but do think that if he did take them, it was likely the post-prison, bwack iz broken, stomper of child testicles iteration.

If his reported training regimen from the 80's is anything near true it was insane. Holy also said that Tyson was the one guy that worked harder than him during those years, so Tyson must have trained remarkably hard. And there steroids would have been of great help.

But, on the other hand, Cus was quite old school and might well have been sceptical of such things, and Tyson definitely had great genetics. But that program... Jesus.

I'm wondering how they would help in golf. PEDs make your balls shrink - that would make them that much harder to hit and control. Don't tee off on me, that simply had to be said.

Not doubting you but which photos are actually of Mike when he was 13 yo? I only ask because I’ve seen people trying to pass off an obviously older Mike off as a few years younger in certain photos - and videos also. I agree that it’s per more likely he was on PEDs post prison - his first public workout seemed to reflect a leaner but perhaps heavier muscled Mike. Tbh, I think he looks that bit smaller these days.

Anabolic steroids are also taken by professional cyclists, who generally look starved.
So the athlete's appearance alone tells us little about who is taking steroids.
Of course I don't have proof of that, but considering how Mike Tyson got wasted at 15 years old; there is a small chance that he was taking steroids.
