Read that Wilfredo Benitez trained 15 days for the Sugar ray fight and it was a struggle to get him to even do that. Freddie Roach said Chavez jr trained with him for just ten days for the Martinez fight the rest of the time he was doing pads in his living room. Who else
Jake lamotta.and he did eat like a pig. Ali said that he hated every minute of the training(but he did it)
Though I do wonder if it was more love/Hate for him with training. Hard to imagine him not falling off with it eventually otherwise.
Are there really any fighters who like to train? I can see talented fighters enjoying the oppurtunity to realize their skills in the beginning of their career but the constant workload, in addition to managing injuries, dealing with trainers isolation from non-boxing people etc wearing down even the most enthusiastic of boxers. We have to remember boxers (usually) fight, and therefore train, for years. The occasional videos on youtube and instagram cant capture the whole picture.
Wilfred Benitez was a notorious bad trainer. Maybe he felt that he was so naturally talented that he didn’t have to train as hard as everyone around him in camp. Rumors are, though that whenever a pretty girl came into the gym, Benitez would suddenly spring into life and train like a madman. Well, I guess that’s one way of motivating a fighter.
Yeah, Page, Tubbs, Dokes, Witherspoon. These guys, for the most part, showed up for fights in visably poor condition - except that Dokes looked in shape. But, we know now that he often trained on cocaine and hoo&ers. I remember Jeff Ryan of KO magazine quipping about Page, "How did he train for the fight? Do a pushup, eat a Ring Ding. Do a situp, eat a Ho Ho. Run a mile, eat a Water Buffalo." LOL.
Once Engels Pedroza discovered he could punch, he pretty much quit training. Nestor Garza missed more than six weeks of an eight week camp before he fought Bones Adams. Nobody knew where he was.
Page was probably the most disappointing of all the 80s heavyweights. After all the drama and claims that Larry Holmes was afraid to face him and had vacated his WBC title to avoid fighting him, Page then goes and turns up in the worst shape of his career in the fight for the vacant title against Tim Witherspoon and huffs and puffs his way to to a decision loss.
