Let me add, his chin was better at 140. I guess he was more comfortable making that weight

Also, a weakness was he was almost too precise at times. He often didn't throw enough punches - but he was a good ring general, he could control pace well, so he could often win rounds without throwing a large number of shots. See the Vinny Paz fight.

Floyd had this same attribute, especially late in his career.

Geese, how does one rate Roger? He hit hard and precise with text book thrown punches, all of them, had decent speed, skilled foot work, great ring generalship, and a fairly weak chin. Without question a real champion.

 

Roger Mayweather was a very, very good fighter. If he'd had a chin, he'd probably be considered an ATG

 

I like this grading. Roger was a pleasure to watch and a very underrated professional. He was a regular on television when I was a kid. Great text book boxer.

I was a fan because I saw the talent and he was kind of an underdog, at times, because he often had to reset after a loss.

I was happy when he schooled Pazienza. Vinny got too much hype.

I always liked Roger Mayweather. As others have said, he wasn't "great" but he was very good. If I had to compare him with someone today, I'd say he was like a Lamont Peterson. Peterson lost to Bradley in one-sided fashion. He got stopped early by Matthysse. He drew with Victor Ortiz. Lost to Danny Garcia in a competitive fight. But he is better than most and is capable of beating a big name (like Amir Khan) once in a while.

That's kind of how Roger Mayweather was, too. Roger wasn't as good as the very best. But he was clearly better than most contenders. He was good enough to win a belt and hold it against some decent but not stellar competition. And he could pull off an upset win over a name here and there.

Just a very solid professional fighter.

 

All the talent in the world. Alot of writers considered him a minature Tommy Hearns. Same style, same big right hand. But Hearns chin was a b minus maybe a c, Mayweathers was a c minus or d.

 

At 140 he was really good. Beat Paz and Brazier. Also punched Lou duva in the face.
