I know conventional boxing wisdom is that 35 is old for boxers. However, Crawford lives the proper lifestyle and doesnt seem to be missing a step. Is this the best version of Crawford or was the 140 version of Crawford better.
His timing as balance looked as good as it ever did. So there's about nothing him that says he's past prime. His lifestyle his clean and he's dedicated. He's fresh and hasn't taken a lot of beatings , if any at all. As long as he remains focused he could have a Hopkins and Mayweather type of extended prime into his late 30's. Prime isn't a number at the end of the day. Canelo is showing more signs of slippage and he's two years younger.
Interesting question. He looked absolutely dominant and masterful against Spence, but Spence was badly drained and damaged goods. He also looked like he's been slipping some in the DA, EK, and Porter fights.
He's not in his physical prime but with a combination of ring IQ and experience it might very well mean he is still actually at the peak of his powers. How long he able to offset the physical decline of age with improvements in strategy and technique is hard to say. I doubt he'll be at his peak for much longer maybe just another couple of fights before the slow and steady decline of age starts to erode his ability. He needs to make the big fights now, which is why he called out Jermell after the fight. But other than a rematch with Spence, I suspect he'll get frozen out again.
He's in the twilight of his prime age wise, but he's physically at his best. It's like with Floyd and Bhop, you live a clean life, train Hard everyday, and you could still be dominating the sport well into your 40s. This is the case with Bud Crawford.
His hands and feet have probably slowed a bit with aging and added muscle, but he's made up for any loss in athleticism in other ways. Offense and timing are still top notch, if not better than ever. His jab was looking Hagler-esque against Spence. And obviously his ring IQ is as high as ever. Still prime, but on the back nine which is to be expected at 35. He doesn't really sound like he wants to keep going for too much longer.
That's why he wants Jermell now...he knows he's got only a few fights left. Mutilate Spence again then either Tim or Jermell. Prolly Tim since Jermell a lil goof
He's 35 so he's past his physical peak, but the erosion of athleticism can be compensated for until about the age of 37 or so. Not many guys are still elite at 38 plus. Maybe nobody. 35 there are still some guys hanging on.
He looked to be his absolute best against Spence. Perhaps he's reached his ceiling physically speaking. Keep in mind that all fighters have different prime years in age. Sergio Martinez is an example of a fighter that seemed to have peaked when he was 35.
Unfortunately for him there arent so many big fights left. Think just Thurman, Ennis, Vergil Ortiz and Tim Tszyu
