Jackie Paterson - Underrated when we talk about the Great Flyweights ??

one of the best fights I've seen from a "supposed nobody", (a different era, and the top fighters were just that, TOP), was Paterson vs Medina, the French Gypsy. He trounced Jackie, but No Shame as Medina was as tidy and tough as they come. It used to be up on YouTube.

Once again showing that you can't just pick 10 men from all over the boxing world - Great belongs to any number of True Top fighters!!!

Paterson was one of the Best, No Question!

 

He knocked out Peter Kane in a round to take the world title.

Kane was one the best flyweights of all time but Paterson crushed him.

I've read that Paterson struggled to make fly which partly accounts for him being stripped of the title for not being able to face Marino and he was supposedly weakened by drastic weight cutting when stopped by Rinty Monaghan.

I don't know what it is with Scottish Flyweights but like Benny Lynch before him Paterson blew all his money and died tragically young (beaten to death in a street fight I believe).

A sad ending for a great fighter.

 

Just checked on wikipedia, that he was stabbed in the neck.

Here's his loss to Monaghan which gives an indication of how weak he was as Rinty bullies him around the ring with ease.

I like the bit where the ref brings the fighters together to let them know that they need to fight harder after what looks like 20 seconds of inactivity after an action packed start to the fight. I wished we could've resurrected the ref for the Wlad-Haye fight last year.

 

at that time Scotland had Benny Lynch, Bert Gilroy, Johnny McGrory, Jackie Paterson and finishing off with Peter Keenan, I don't think they have ever had more than one or two on top ever since.

McGowan, Calderwood & McCormack was probably the next best period for Scotland.

 

now theres a guy who IS underated. John Joseph Monaghan. I wouldnt be too hard on Patersons strength as Rinty was strong as a bull

 

You know it Vic-J. He was irish, british,european,commonwealth and world champ when he retired. A much loved fighter in these shores along with the guy who lost to your namesake, johnny caldwell

 

You're not wrong there.

Paterson was a stocky guy but Monaghan is way broader across the chest and shoulders which is probably why he had a big edge in raw physical strength here. That said Paterson did look quite gaunt in the face at the weigh in and the fact he never made fly again after this gives some evidence of his struggles.

Funnily enough Monaghans lone stoppage loss was to Paterson in Paterson's second pro fight a decade prior to their title fight but Rinty turned the tables in impressive fashion here.

It's easy to see why Monaghan was such a popular figure in Belfast with his exciting style and winning personality.

Paterson features in a piece I'm working on so I thought I'd share some of the stiff I've learnt about him recently.

We all know he was a renowned puncher, but I didn't realise that at one point not only was he the World flyweight champion but outright Lonsdale belt holder at the weight, and Commonwealth and European champ' at bantam as well.

Walter McGowan had world fly and European bantam titles as well I think. Might be getting my dates wrong but think he won the euro strap at this time in the robbery against Rudkin.

Does Paterson outstrip McGowan? And would Walter's tendency to get too involved be a mistake against his fellow Scot', who possessed tremendous power in both hands ?(have always wanted to see his 1st round KO over Peter Kane, though saw some more Kane recently)

Paterson was obviously very weak at the weight when he lost to Rinty in their rubber match, but Monaghan was very strong and had a solid enough dig in the right hand. While their first two fights show it was close between the two, and that the 3rd fight might be a little more emphatic than was true of their talents, could Rinty outrank Paterson anyway?

How weak? Take into account he'd fainted on the scales against Marino and had to pull out of the fight, and how all the talk going in was how he might not make weight....well, I'd say it's enough that, on same day weigh in's, we have to cut Paterson a little slack rather than take kudos from Monaghan. The way he finished was a display of merciless brutality. But such a sweet singing voice(!)

Likes of Paterson, Marino, Monaghan and Shirai rarely get mentioned. It's Benny Lynch........Pascual Perez. Bit of a forgotten era for the little guys was WW2.

Beating Jim Brady for the Commonwealth title. Had previously lost a decision to Brady.

Losing on points to Rowan. Commentator might say he wasn't the same anymore but Rowan had battered inside two rounds years before! Paterson dropped here as well, but past his best.

Defending all of his Flyweight belts, World included, against Joe Curran. Seems a domestic gimme fight to me, but Paterson's only successful defence I think. Curran was ranked highly by The Ring for a couple of years but can't get a grasp on why. Lack of info' I guess, need to do more research. Still, Paterson looks good and the crowd, boxrec says 50,000, is a sight to see! Amazing!

I have no doubt Benny Lynch would batter Paterson. That's not really being harsh to Paterson, who was clearly very good.
