James Toney is not done with it yet. He will return in an immediate rematch against Ellis or against another low level opponent. Apparently, Toney did not bother to train for Ellis. He did only 6 rounds of sparring (and this was after a 2 year lay off!!).

Still, Toney was making Ellis (6 foot 5) miss all night but Ellis was running and playing it safe with the jab. James was a little optimistic in thinking that he could just knock out this giant early, at age 46.

I do not mind seeing Toney beating up a couple of bums if he can still do it. A this stage, he has more left in the tank than Jones and Tarver.Tarver, who is not even a heavyweight to begin with, is all talk and Jones can't take a punch anymore. Both are done, it is just that they benefit from some clever matchmaking.

Come on man, Tarver would KO Toney easily and Roy Jones wins every minute of every round against him.

Before the fight vs Ellis, they said Toney was in very good shape and has been training a lot for this fight, and now he only had 6 rounds of sparring?

    Toney is shot to bits.

all 3 of 'em are shot, and none of them are real heavyweights! ..and should go retire somewhere were there's no ring or any chance of 'em lacing them up again. The governing bodies need to start thinking of the safety of brain damaged fighters and protect them from themselves by not giving them a licence to box.

Judging from the fightpics, Toney was not in shape for this. JT's claims of having trained for "7 months" turned out to be all talk. His lack of preparation was just another slap in the face for his followers. As usual, poor management and matchmaking (as it has consistantly been the case since his split with Goosen) did the rest to add a 10th!! loss on James resume. I just can't see him training hard in order to save what is left of his career. I wouldn't have minded Toney taking the Roy Jones route and having a few easy paydays against subpar opposition, but seeing him in this kind of shape and performing badly just makes me wish that he retires within this year.

Why do you think Tarver is shot? He beat the terribly overrated Cunningham (ranked in most people top 10 HW on this board) but got robbed by a draw.

Toney losing to a guy like Ellis, who is hardly B-level, is just unacceptable. Even at age 46.
I know that Ellis took this fight dead serious and had a 5+ week long camp in preparation. He is 6 foot 5 and looked to be in fantastic shape. He was a successful amateur, so he can box - he's not just a tomato can. Definitely the wrong guy for Toneys comeback.
Toney bragged about being in great shape, but he was fat as always. Now I hear he's only had 6 rounds of sparring... after a two year break. How can you think you can win a fight with that kind of preparation? Toney must be delusional.

Toney needs to sit down and have a deep look inside himself. He needs a reality check. If he wants to continue, he has to take boxing dead serious again. Get focused and motivated again. That has always been his problem. Earlier in his career, he could get by without training based on his skills and talent alone, and even then he struggled sometimes. Now that his skills have deteriorated, that won't just do anymore.
I can see Toney training really hard, get down to 210lbs and then take it step by step. First rematch Ellis. If that goes well, then a rematch with Jason Gavern.
If he can win these two fights and look good doing so, it's time to step up and challenge either Tarver or Arreola in a 'loser retires' match. Or why not Shannon Briggs? That would be fun fights that would get some media attention - I believe Toney could get himself motivated for such a fight. If Toney can get through all that without another loss, maybe a rematch with Roy Jones Jr. is a possibility down the line. The fight would be huge in Moscow.
If Toney can't get his sh*t together and his ass in shape first though, he should pack it up and retire.

Toney has been finished since he was thoroughly out boxed by Sam Peter not once but twice :rofl:patsch

He is approaching Larry Holmes level with the excuses also it is getting ridiculous. He never accomplished anything at Heavyweight other than failing 2 PED tests. That is his legacy.

He approached and went past Holmes geriatric tour level years ago. This is just beyond upsetting and unsettling for me as a Toney fan.

I think all of these older MW/LHW's should've retired already. Jones has a comfy gig on HBO, so I don't think he's chasing the money. In Toney's case, I don't know what his primary motivation is for continuing on but I have to think it's a financially driven move on his part.

I rate Toney and Jones higher than Calzaghe as fighters, but Calzaghe picked the perfect time to retire. These guys should follow suit.

Toney is way too arrogant and defensive to take an honest look at himself about anything. Psychologically he is a very primitive man, very immature. Of course he shouldn't be fighting, though I do think fights with guys like Briggs (who would beat him on conditioning alone) might be interesting.

I don't agree with the poster who said Toney achieved nothing at heavyweight. I thought his KO over America's Sweetheart, Evander Holyfield, was incredibly impressive.

I'd wager he'll be as bitter as Holmes when he finally retires too.
