In all honesty I think roy won too decisively for his own legacies sake. My guess is if it were to have been a close hard fought battle, it would have went down as one of the better wins in history. In my opinion too much is taken away from toney in this fight and not enough credit is given to roy for the performance he put forth. Yes, toney had weight issues, but in all honesty 90% of his fights one could make that excuse for him so to throw that out there and say it was the sole reason roy won is an unfair statement. If this fight was a war and or a much closer fight, do you guys think roy would have received more kudos for the win, and do you think he deserves more as is?
In all honesty, Toney was not in good shape for this fight. He wasn't physically ready. He had to drain himself down a lot and he did marginally well considering his condition. That version of Toney was probably his worst version of him in that era. He was generally considered in his prime around the time he fought Jones, but that wasn't prime Toney. I believe the versions of Toney that preceded the Jones fights would have given even prime Roy a much closer fight. However, I'm still not sure if Toney could beat prime Roy. All the stars had to align perfectly for Toney to have a chance to beat prime Roy.
I always wished they had rematched after Roy beat Ruiz and Toney beat Holyfield, or even after Jirov. Roy still had a lot of movement for James to contend with, but it would've been a better fight than their first one.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1m7RV55wrCE At the time, this was viewed as a great fight. Toney's weight issues were always there, didn't stop him from winning belts at MW and SMW. Credit still needs to be given to Roy for a masterful performance against one of the very best fighters alive at that time.
James was in bad condition due to how much weight he had to shift, that isn't Roy's fault but it probably contributed to how one sided the fight turned out to be. I don't think the result would have been any different had it been Toney at his best though, Jones would have still got it done on points. Jones just has Toney's number style wise I think - mostly coming down to the sheer difference in footspeed.
Was it the hard left hand in round 5? I think it shook Roy up a bit, and proves to me at least that at his very best, Roy's jaw was not pure glass.
Till this day , Toney still won't give Roy his credit for beating him . It stings that bad when someone gives you your first loss .
Because he knows he wasn't at his best. He was drained and wasn't hydrated. Roy beat him wit a sucka move he stole from a game****.
Listen here troll.. If Jones was roided, then so was Toney... Even playing field. You are an absolute joke, and I am surprised you are still allowed to post here.
Also, there was a rumor coming from Jones' camp that Roys right hand was injured a month before the fight and didn't hit the bag with it at all nor through any power punches with it period, until the fight.
