Last fight you watched that would have been stopped now?

Pretty simple question. Boxing fights are routinely stopped earlier and earlier as boxing has gone along the last 30 plus years, I think that much is undeniable. There are exceptions, of course.

Watching Chacon vs Limon IV recently and there must have been three or four times during that bout where I could see a modern referee waving the fight off. I guess that makes it a more "humane" sport, but being humane isn't what boxing is about and fights being stopped earlier and earlier just might be the sole reason we're seeing less and less great fights.

Anyway, what was the last fight you watched that surprised you in this capacity?

Yh your right. When you sign up for boxing you should know theres always a chance you could get a bad whooping.
When rocky split his nose in his rematch vs charles that probably wouldve been stopped today.

One that slipped through the net in the last 30 yrs was Scott Harrison v Wayne McCullough. That fight was excruciating to watch, and no doubt should have been stopped. Wayne had no chance of winning as was getting bludgeoned round after round and 1000% could never ever have turned it round

It's not as easy as you think to decide on this because every referee is different. Bobby Chacon would not last the distance today in a Boza-Edwards II type of scenario. In fact, a lot of referees would have stopped that fight back in '83.

What do you think it says about boxing that there's next to no chance we'll ever be able to see another Bobby Chacon? Is that a good thing, or a bad thing?

Johansson-Patterson l (I watch that trilogy quite often)....there's no way that it would have gone on past the 3 kd stage today.

I imagine some refs would allow it to go on, but not very many. A select few. Look at Joe Cortez allowing Marquez to continue against Pacquiao after being knocked down three times in one round. Devils advocate!

Several of Saad Muhammad fights....maybe the Yaqui Lopez fight when Lopez wore himself out beating
    on Saad.

I have watched all the Saad fights that were televised

Pertaining to the second Lopez fight, In the eighth round,, Saad was hurt and backed to the ropes. Lopez went all out to finish him, but Saad held his hands high and moved his head left and right to dodge almost all the punches while he was on the ropes, before firing back. I don't think a modern ref, if he knew what he was doing, would stop it. There were more than 10 unanswered punches but very few landed and none hurt Saad.

And that was the most hurt Saad was in any of his title fights until the Braxton Loss.

Possibly the Richie Kates fight would have been stopped if it happened today.

Saad was dropped face first in one round just before the bell. But, he beat the count and was helped back to his corner by his cornerman.

It took him half the next round to recover fully, then he exploded off the ropes and hurt Kates.

You are right ^. A lot of the Saad fights are similar and run together in my mind.

I think Eubank Watson 2 may have been stopped when Chris was knocked down by today's standards.

Would have saved poor Michael's career.

Trinidad - Vargas is an example of a modern fight that should have been stopped sooner. There's no way Vargas should have had to take that third knockdown in the 12th. Jay Nady did a terrible job there but so did Vargas's corner. He never recovered from that.

How about some 90's fights? I personally think boxing has changed dramatically, even going back
    "just" to the 90's.

Would the Bowe-Holyfield triology of gone any different?

In the mid 90's "Prince" Charles Williams was reaching the very end of his career, and one of his final bouts was a brutal, grueling fight against Merqui Sosa that ended up being a TD, stopped after seven because neither fighter could continue.

Somehow, I don't think that would have happened 20 years prior, in the mid 70's when Chacon and Saad were doing their thing. They simply would have fought.

Steve Smoger, correct? Some will tell you (including me, if you want to be honest) that he's among the last of the great refs. It seems like there are more bad refs than good ones nowadays, which is a terrible disappointment.
