http://www.fightnews.com/fightnews_2...prnwIMJxu.html Resto admits loaded handwraps! Thursday, April 3 2008 Former welterweight fighter Luis Resto admitted today at a press conference in New York City that he not only battered "Irish" Billy Collins Jr. for ten rounds with padding-removed gloves, but that his knuckles were pre-cast with tape soaked in plaster of Paris - before the hollowed gloves were placed over his fists. Resto, along with his trainer Panama Lewis, were both convicted, incarcerated for 30 months, and received a lifetime ban from boxing. The brutally-beaten Collins quickly fell into a downward spiral and died in a car accident nine months later. An attorney for Collins' widow Andrea Collins-Nile today filed a motion in Federal District Court to reopen the previous case against the State of New York. That case, alleging "gross and wanton dereliction of duty, breach of contract, assault and battery, conspiracy, fraud, and negligence of the commission" for failing to detect the doctored gloves was dismissed in 1994. With Resto's revelation today that his handwraps were also tampered with, something the NYSAC should have detected, Collins' family believes the original judgment would have been different. Resto's admission came to help promote a new film titled "Cornered," which documents the scandal.
It's a documentary that he didn't produce. I imagine he admitted it in the movie, so it's probably better to come out with it in advance. The whole thing sucks though, but I'm glad he's finally manned up for it. He already served a 2 1/2 year prison sentence for this, and he's broke as hell (and will probably have to give whatever he got for the movie, if anything, to Collins' family), so he's already been punished for it. It's late, but better for him to say something than to not say anything.
He has surpressed 25 years of a horrible act. An act lead to the death of Billy Collins Jr. I think at the very least Resto owes a confession to the Collins family. Resto is a nasty piece of work, but have no doubt, Panama Lewis is the architect of this case; the manslaughter of Collins.
