It has already been 20 years since this classic fight took place. 2 ATGs where they were both just so well matched and gave some of the most intense fights. The first fight Marquez was dropped three times but managed to regain control and won the majority of the rounds while Pacquiao fought hard to gain back some of his momentum. The fight ends in a controversial draw but it would only be the start of a legendary rivalry.

This is my scorecard the 9th round was the closest round of the fight depending on who you think won it could decide who was the winner for you.

Juan Manuel Marquez vs Manny Pacquiao 1

    1 Pacquiao 10-6 3 knockdowns
    2 Pacquiao
    3 Marquez
    4 Marquez
    5 Marquez
    6 Marquez
    7 Pacquiao
    8 Marquez
    9 Marquez
    10 Pacquiao
    11 Marquez
    12 Marquez

    113-112 Marquez

I've always felt Marquez deserved to win this fight and my opinion hasn't changed, the first 6 rounds are pretty easy to score IMO. After that it gets a bit tougher for me the closest round in the fight was the 9th round, but for the most part i felt like Marquez was able to fight his kind of fight. It took Marquez 2 rounds to adjust to Pacquiao's speed, but once he did he had Pacquiao pretty measured apart from a couple of rounds. I also forgot how many good body punches Marquez landed in the fight aswell.

Overall for me Marquez won this fight based on clean punching, ring generalship, nullifying Pacquiao's aggression for a large periods in the fight.

I too thought Marquez won the fight, but I knew he wouldn't get the win, actually I was surprised he got a draw.

Great fight and one I watched quite a few times over the years. I thought Marquez won at the time and even after repeated viewings still always score it for Marquez.

It was before they were ATG's, but when you realise what they were at the time, it makes it that much more of an insane outcome. Stuff like this builds a legend on both sides.

3 KDS in the first round, my goodness i thought Pac was going to blow JMM out. I remember watching that fight live on HBO and was off the edge of my seat the whole time. What a fight that was.

this is the fight that i realized both these 2 guys were for real. i remember coming away from it impressed with juans nerves of steel, for getting dropped 3 times right out the gate and coming back to outbox pac most of the fight. i gave it to jmm. i also realized pacs talent and what an absolute nightmare he was going to be once he got polished to a shine.

Always had Marquez winning all 3 fights. Pacquiao knew it too, he never would have given him all those rematches if he knew he won at least one convincingly.

That being said this first one imo could have gone either way.

Pacquiao was the star yet still fought his stylistic nightmare 4 times in total. Says a lot about his attitude to risk.

Marquez was a great fighter too, just really was juiced to the gills in the 4th fight. And the fight after where he punched Alvarado across the ring
