question just asked on another forum....what is the origin of red & blue corners in boxing....does it have any historical meaning?
Because it would sound wierd if Hatton was "fighting out of the black corner..". Blue and Red have always been the colors used to designate different teams in matchups - i.e. red team, blue team. Blue and red are colors that are easy to see and aren't going to blend in to the surroundings, plus they are gender-nuetral, therefore they are the most common. There you go, the history of red and blue.
this is an old thread, but i've uncovered some new information. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_339NhpgmDw[/ame] go towards the last 30 seconds of the video...
Often, the ref would be told that the fighter in the red corner has to win etc. I'm exhausted, so I won't waffle, but it was a way of identifying which guy the men in charge wanted to accomplish what. (The IBC etc.)
There is a video on youtube of tyson explaining this. Something to do with gangs putting tehir colours on a flagpost to represent their fighter. I'll try find the link later. The winning colour(gang) would then have 'rights' to that city until their fighter could be beaten.
theres a good video where tyson explains this - he was on a tv show and this rj kept on interupting him like a mofo and didn't let him speak.
I believe it has to do with the centuries-old feud between the Tecate ring girls and the Corona ring girls. :yep
