Can anyone hook me up with interviews, where Futch gives a breakdown on a fighter. i.e their weaknesses and strengths. Any fighter will do:Ali, Jones etc. Also does anyone know what Futch game plan was for Griffin Jones II? Futch on James Toney http://www.thesweetscience.com/boxing-article/3491/magic-touch-eddie-futch-lives/ Not really a breakdown, but its all I could find Futch on Roy Jones http://www.eastsideboxing.com/curly1110.html http://www.***********.com/?m=show&id=4388
Futch had how to fight Ali down to a T. With jabing with him and using it as an up jab that came up, as the main part of the strategy.
Futch is a genius - more trainers should get their fighter to fall down, to encourage the opponent to hit them whilst they're on floor, it's a brilliant gameplan.
Thanks for reminding me of that, ill try and find that now EDIT: found it source:http://www.bad left hook.com/2010/9/5/1671413/eddie-futch-on-ken-norton
He could do anything he wanted, because he had gotten rid of Nortons jab. But he never did. It was a basic move. But hed done it the other way for so long he didnt know how to change.
Fantastic Read. Thanks Mate. There's not many trainers that would get there man to jab with a guy like Ali or even contemplate it. Love them type reads, makes me think a lot more about fights i'm watching etc.
Perhaps you should actually watch the fight. No one had given Roy anywhere near the kind of troubles Griffin had up until the knockdown and subsequent foul. He may not've won had the fight continued (Roy was starting to come on), but regardless, Griffin's performance up to that point was indeed a testament to Futch's greatness as a strategist.
The man sounds like a genius. Roach seems to have a similar approach, I guess it shows as Roach was his student.
Thanks You can see that Jones used some of Futch's strategy during his fight with Toney, by rarely using the right hand and using mostly left hooks. Which didnt give Toney a chance to shoulder roll and come back with a counter right
