What do you guys think is more important when it comes to positioning against southpaws who are right handed or have a strong right hook? Normally, one would circle to their left vs southpaws and keep their left foot on the out side. But if the southpaw's power hand is their right, then it may be dangerous. It's dangerous to circle into your opponent's power hand, but it's also important to get the outside position on southpaws which will open up more of your offense and limit their's. Which do you think is more important? Some examples. Pernell is a southpaw himself, but it still applies. Against Oscar, he circled toward Oscar's left hand the whole fight, but mostly kept the outside position. This content is protected
I'd circle to the right handed southpaw's left. Guys who aren't fighting out of their natural stance have the most weak sauce straights and crosses.
You could counter their left with your right. This content is protected It takes some good footwork. Ortiz had his lead foot on the outside there, so Mayweather stepped to his right to get avoid the trajectory of the left and come over the top with his own cross. roach has mentioned this maneuver before too. emmanuel was supposed to move his feet to set himself into position to counter Juan's right with his own left, but he failed to do it.
yeah I feel you. My friend fights southpaw and is right handed, and I been toying with his straight left :yep dang I'm trying to picture this right now and it's perfect for this situation
yep, the str8 is so reliant on the force of pushing off with your rear foot to turn them hips into the punch. There's not as much force to rocket off of for a converty since they're pushing off with the weaker leg. Chances are if you're left handed, you're also left footed and vice-versa. The majority of converties don't ever develop good straights. Converties have ghetto balance to top it all off. Is your friend Ortiz?
Southpaw myself but if the shoe was on the other foot, I'd circle towards the left as per, but I'd keep my hands higher and my jab working constantly, your offence opens up as standard and hopefully you occupy their right hand (power hand) by pumping your left jab. That would be important too, don't flick the jab, but pump it.
ya I know what you mean. All converts seem to have awkward footwork. It's weird though, because I hears right handers are supposed to jump off their left leg :huh This content is protected But I think that's so they can swing their right leg and it's better balance when they go up with their right arm. And BTW, Bernard was moving toward Winky's left. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBNZuVU8Ig4&feature=related[/ame]
It explains quite a bit now that you mentioned how people are supposed to jump off with their weaker leg. If you look at how all the converted guys fight: Cotto(e), Ortiz, Oscar, etc, they all have this annoying little bounce in their step. Your rear leg is your base in boxing, and these guys end up constantly jumping with their weaker leg being the foundation. This could be why Cotto(e) is known for over committing to his jab, he just jumps into that *****, see the Zab Judah fight. Miguel looked like a flying pig in his most recent fight. I heard that Winky is also a converty. He has an ATG southpaw jab and awkward footwork. It looks like he's trying to shake his AZZ each time he moves. Even though fighting southpaw gives people the advantage of using awkward angles you still see more lefties going righty than righties going lefty. I'd much rather be a righty in the southpaw stance than the opposite, but we live in a right hander's world.
Damn very very good point :thumbsup I just tried experimenting with that and it made lots of sense. I switched southpaw for a second and I had that weird bounce you talked about and my jab was flying forward. Ya I feel you though. My friend the other day was saying how it's like cheating being a right handed southpaw, but I tried telling him that you'd be all out of wack and be one handed. I'm right handed and fight orthodox and I use my jab so much that I'm almost ambidextrous now. My hand isn't coordinated enough in my left to write with, but my left arm is more reliable, coordinated and accurate :rofl but the thing with Winky that helps him out is he fights somewhat flat footed a lot and doesn't try to jump forward with his jab.
Marvin Hagler was a right-hander who fought southpaw. His left was actually good though. He was a strong puncher in either stance. SRL said he was more wary of Hagler's right when they fought though. I assume most would be more wary of the stronger hand of the opponent, regardless of what stance they fight out of.
Hagler switches back and forth a lot, but you got a good point. I started thinking about this really when I watched the Sweet Pea fight the other day, but I guess he's just so slick he can move toward your hand and not get hit :rasta [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnzeSN0lzFI[/ame]
