Just watched a documentary on Youtube about Shea Neary. Suprised to learn how popular he was. Kinda like a Liverpool version of Ricky Hatton just on a smaller scale. Also learned that he wasnt even a good amateur and sheer determination got him as far as he did. Have alot more respect for the fella after watching that.
Remember him and Magee...........the entrance. Shea just sat in his corner hooded as the bells tolled (I think).............loved it. Pretty sure there there is/was a bit of heat regarding the result........ Anyways.......
I'll never forget the neary/ward fight in 2000. Was on the undercard of hamed v bungu. How many people even remember that main event? Neary was the English "Irish" Micky ward. Great matchmaking and a night to remember for sure.
I won a few quid on Ward because I'd remembered a piece on him in KO Magazine from a few years before as being a prospect to watch.
Shea was class, a real warrior and the Ward fight is a sleeper as they say. Shea was actually ahead on the scorecards up to the stoppage. He was using some decent boxing and was showing good work but the body shot hurt him.
ITV desperately tried to get him (and Robbie Regan) over after losing Naseem. He was a fun fighter to watch, but struggled when matched above domestic level, and that probably cost him becoming a household name outside of Merseyside.
Great fight that Ward - Neary fight . His son James "Kid Shamrock" Metcalfe made his debut at the weekend winning on points, he is the image of his ol' lad.
