Was Jeff Lacy all hype? Or did Calzaghe just ruin a good fighter?

Completely all hype with no substance behind it. This is a guy who did absolutely nothing in the amateurs, and in the pro's had also not done a damn thing.

Jeff was definitely a good fighter - not all hype!
He was just the unfortunate victim of a rare perfect storm; Calzaghe was seriously underrated and Jeff was overrated. No one, Welsh people included, knew at the time that Joe was a legit HOFer / ATG. Jeff was the hapless attendee of Joe's coming out party. It happens.

I beg to differ Jack, I stated on this very board ( main page ) prior to the Lacy fight it would be a comfortable win for Joe v Jeff I knew exactly how Joe would nullify Jeff's power . And I'm Welsh , I did however get a bit carried away when i said Joe would stop Hopkins though I'll admit to that ...lol

As much as I like Calzaghe as a boxer I gotta say Lacy was mostly hype. He didn't even pass the eye test so to speak, didn't really do anything above and beyond what any average fighter could do.

A little bit of both! I don’t think anyone (or more than a couple) could have exploited and taken advantage of some of Lacy’s flaws and weaknesses. Lacy was certainly hyped and his power was able to wow us and disguise some of his technical shortcomings. To say he was mere hype is a little bit ofvrevisionist history. Calzaghe’s workrate and skill exploited what was an unknown in Lacy and his weakness. Most guys simply were not on a level to overwhelm him...he unfortunately ran into one who could. If he avoided this fight I don’t think he would be thought of as poorly as he is today.

He was hype. Some lower level guy did the same thing to him in the amateurs.

Calzaghe ruined him. Lacy WAS a boogeyman in the sport until Super Joe abused the **** out of him. Was never the same after.

His best win is Omar SHeika. Sheika is considered one of Calzaghes many weakazz wins. Do the math.

Jeff lacy would of been the king of 168-175kb division for decades.

He just came across sir Joe Calzaghe and got battered like many after him and before. 46-0 there is no blueprint .

He was overhyped, I remember people calling him the "Next Mike Tyson" He clearly wasn't that. That being said, Calzaghe took his heart that night, I think Lacey would have achieved a bit more in the sport if he didn't fight Joe.

Jeff Lacy was overrated and slow, Joe was underrated, too sharp for Lacy and Joe was a really good fighter as he was to prove in the last couple of years of his career. He embarrassed Jeff that night in a 12=0 shutout.
