A lot of people in Mexico believe he was. And they are pushing that theory on You Tube. They talk about how Cristobal Rosas said Sal told him he was going to meet someone that day and that he looked worried. They say that maybe the Wilfredo Gomez fight was supposed to be fixed in Gomez's favor. I think this could be an attempt at discrediting all the wins Gomez had had, especially against other Mexican boxers, from their part. But also I do not myself discredit the theory either. It is, after all, possible. On the other hand, if, and this is a BIG if, he was murdered as they seem to think, I think maybe the fight they should be looking at would be his upcoming rematch with Laporte? Maybe they wanted to bet on Laporte, considering Sanchez had won their first fight, was considered to be so high above Laporte and a superstar and the bets were going to favor Sanchez? I don't know. Nothing will ever be proven , even if indeed it wasn't an accident. And there is also the possibility, as I always believed and still believe, that it might have just been that: an accident. There were too many people who were going to be making money off him in the future with too many big fights still to be done anyways. What do you all think?
Sanchez broke training camp, went out drinking with friends in public, was speeding late at night back to camp, crashed into a tractor trailer at high speed, and his car got crushed under the huge truck and was stuck under there. His head got smashed. Unfortunately for all of us who were fans of his at the time, little plastic sports cars lose every time when colliding head on into tractor trailers. The only difference between Sanchez and Errol Spence was that Errol didn't hit anything and fell out of the car when his vehicle was demolished in a high-speed crash. Nobody was trying to kill either of them. Sanchez just signed a big money deal (for the time, for his weight), he was going to fight in MSG for the first time, he had a relatively easy opponent (for him) he'd already beaten before, and he went out one night and didn't come home. It sucks. But terribly dumb stuff like that happens.
The recklessness of youth is the reason for the death of Sal Sanchez. Like most successful young men in their twenties the mindset of invulnerability leads to unfortunate accidents, and that is the leading cause of death in that age group. I'm sure most of us on this site in their 40's , 50's and above can relate.... Lord knows I never thought about what COULD happen to me running the old KZ Vulcan well over a 120 mph's in the late 80's early 90's........ Today, I realize how stupid and lucky I was lol.
Right, when you get older and need several hands to count all the young people you've known who have died in car accidents it just becomes a sad reality. No conspiracies are required. It happened far too often, especially back then.
Myself, in the late 90s during the youth-fueled era, me and "the club" used to hop on my brother's red Camaro and speed at about 100 on the freeway like nothing was going to happen. Sometimes there were 6 of us crammed onto a four-passenger car. As I stated before, I am much older than my siblings and so naturally, my brother and sister's friends were my friends too, even though some in our group were 11 years younger than me. And I was so small a lot of times people thought I was a 13-year-old myself (my sister and her friends who were also my friends were between 16 and 17 then) so, we all fit into a four-passenger car without trouble. I'd then sing stuff like "Tonight's the Night", 'You Take it on the Road" and, especially to the chagrin of our Christian friend Paul, "Running with the Devil!" and then, I'd start saying "we're gonna die and have dinner in Hell tonight" lol It was a lot of fun, but it was also stupid because of the insensitivity, when you think about it, to all those who have lost their lives in an accident and to the innocent drivers around us.
