I've been looking at the ESPN boxing website at the champions list, and next to some names (for example, the WBC Middleweight Champion Kelly Pavlik) there is a (b) next to his name, and several other letters in brackets next to other names. At the bottom of the page it says for example ((b) means Sebastian Zbik is the WBC interim middleweight champion). Could someone please explain this to me, and how you can be an 'interim' champion? And what, for example, does Kelly Pavlik do if Sebastian Zbik looses his interim WBC Middleweight championship? Here is the ESPN champions list I am talking about... http://sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/news/story?page=boxing/champions/index
"Interim champion" is an alias for "free paycheck" in the business world of criminal boxing organizations.
Supposedly when the Champ is injured and cant defend his title two fighter fight for a temporary title. When the champ comes back they unify the title. If the champ does not come back in tim ethe interim becomes the official champ.
Interem champions are named when the supposed real champ is too much of a baby to actually step in the ring.
Could someone also explain to me what 'regular' champions and what a 'super champion' is? Also, I've checked the schedule and on November 7th, Chad Dawson and Clinton Woods are fighting for the vacant WBC 'Interim' Light Heavyweight Championship. Could someone please explain to me how that comes about? If a 'interim' championship becomes vacant, shouldn't it just be gotten rid of, and the original champion become the only champion for that belt? I need this clearing up! Very confused!
Its just another crooked way for the A-B-C organizations to make more money ! Interim is bull**** at its best....
regular champions are the guys who hold the belt for that organization i.e. wbo, wbc, ibf, wba. but super champion is a wba creation to make elite regulur champions stand out from the other belt holders...got to remember that commisions want to look relevent and want to stand out. so by creating the super champ belt the wba makes there normal belt holders look better. but it has backfired, the more belts you produce the more you hyperinflate and makes your belts less worthy. the wba has snookered itself by creating these things but what can you do also the money involved is incredible. they make a killing by just making leather straps
Ostensibly, the "Super Champ" is meant to allow easier title unification as they won't have the mandatory obligations the "Regular" champ does. In reality, it's just a way to create another sanctioning fee. Interim titles are a way of allowing a sanctioning fee to be applied to what is really a manatory eliminator fight (which basically what is happening with Woods/Dawson).
Im seriously considering to stop watching this sport at all. All these belts and fees and nonsense and robberies, it just ****in sickens me. The WBA is the worst tho.
