The dictionary definition of bum says a boxer who fights below his level.

But boxing fans seem to refer to everyone as a bum. It seems most people take bum to mean a fighter that is not worthy of being a professional boxer, rubbish and over rated.

So what do you take bum to mean?

It's a term primarily used by keyboard warriors, throwing it around the minute a world-class athlete suffers any kind of setback.

Said tongue-in-cheek a lot to be honest. I think most people would admit guys they call bums aren't actually bums (as in that bad).

I think it's used more so around here when someone elite is fighting below their level. Let's say Fury took a fight against someone outside the top 30, he would get criticism for fighting a "bum."

It’s many ways to be a bum..
If your a top 5 fighter in a good division and are fighting guys not even top 20-30 that’s a bum.

If you a great fighter in a division going thru a down period well they all bums.

if you a world champion pulling a Chavez fighting guys with 5/6 fights those are bums.

Guys who win vacant titles and only fight bottom feeder mandatories those are bums fighting bums.

Just a few examples for you

In English 1 word can mean many different things, also we make words not the other way around so a definition can change over time or can have multiple definitions.

I generally don't use the term. I feel a bum is someone who has potential, but doesn't train hard enough to reach it an makes a fool of himself in the process.

Bum is a term used cynically by boxing fans for a fighter who has been dragged up from levels below by a dodgy manager to lose to the promoted fighter. To call a fighter a bum is not generally meant to directly disparage the skills of said fighter; instead, it is used to portray frustration at the now standard mismatches we see. When two fighters who are levels below championship caliber are squared off in a competitive matchup, boxing fans are overwhelmingly positive toward them and their skills.

99% of the time "bum" = "fighter you dont like for whatever reason".

No matter if he's good or not XD

The other 1% of the time, these are bums:

A bum is someone who literally just sits on their bum because they’re too lazy to do anything else. Hence why homeless people get called bums.

So in a boxing sense, a bum is someone who is inactive and not very good because they can’t be arsed to train, keep in shape, and give 100% effort.

There are two kinds of "bum" in boxing.

#1 is the paid journeyman loser who is basically just there to pad records. David Jaco comes right to mind from the old days.

#2 is a talented guy who never lives up to expectations. Whereas #1 always lives up to expectations, because he is expected to lose, #2 is a guy who never maximizes his talent and gets the big win. Zab Judah and Adrien Broner are these types of bums.
