Hmmm. On career strengths & watching him fight, it’s Nelson, hands down. But he’s such an excuse-mongerer, I like the less accomplished but classier Ike Quartey a lot more.
Almost all of these Ghanaians are tough as nails. I was a big Ike Quartey fan back in the 90s. But, at their bests, there was none better than "The Professor." A true All-Time-Great.
Claiming you were "robbed" every time you get outfought is no better. His post-fight interview after getting whupped by Vargas (1:12:17 below) is probably the most classless either fighter has ever given. This content is protected
I thought he beat Oscar and definitely should have got the decision against Vernon Forrest. That fight with Forrest was a robbery. Winky and Vargas legit beat him but nobody ever knocked him out.
I don't know anyone that thought he beat Vargas. Ike could definitely be delusional. I still think he beat Oscar and have watched that fight multiple times. Ike dominated the middle rounds against Oscar.
I saw an interview with him a few years ago and he said he feels like he did legitimately lose that one. He said Vargas was the only ever fighter to legitimately beat him at his best. I’d agree with that, I felt he beat Oscar (close but clear) & he definitely outpointed Lopez & got robbed against Forrest.
I would love to know what Tito thinks about him and if they were ever really close to fighting at 147. That would have been such a fun fight. I'm curious if Tito ever talked about Ike with you? It would have been a war!
